CANADA’S biggest port has issued its first ship-to-ship LNG bunkering accreditation.
The Vancouver Fraser Port Authority has authorised Vancouver company Seaspan Energy to refuel selected ships calling at the port with LNG.
The authority said the accreditation followed a multi-year assessment that took into account international best practices on safety and recognised guidelines from the Society for Gas as a Marine Fuel.
Seaspan Energy vice president Harly Penner said the accreditation was “an important next step in Seaspan Energy’s journey towards offering low-carbon solutions for ship owners”.
“LNG will play an integral role in the global transition to cleaner marine fuels, as we collectively aim to meet the International Maritime Organization’s emissions reductions targets by 2030 and beyond,” he said.
“Being the first company to receive this LNG bunkering accreditation from the VFPA is a very meaningful step towards the start up of our Vancouver-based LNG bunker hub and I’m proud that Seaspan Energy will be at the forefront of helping to drive the marine industry towards a more sustainable future.”
Seaspan Energy said it was working to operate three LNG bunkering vessels along the North American west coast.
Two of the three, Seaspan Garibaldi (IMO: 9974319) and Seaspan Lions (IMO: 9974321), will enter service soon, the company said.
